Abstract Objective To investigate the prevalence of depressive symptoms among middle-aged and elderly residents in Xihu District, Hangzhou City, so as to provide insights into prevention and intervention of depression for these populations. Methods Based on the Community-based Cohort Study of Neurological Diseases project of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the residents aged 55 years and above were selected from a community and an administrative village in Xihu District using a multi-stage random sampling method. Demographic information, lifestyle and disease history were collected using questionnaire surveys in 2018 and 2021. Depressive symptoms were evaluated using the Geriatric Depression Scale, and the prevalence of depressive symptoms was analyzed. Results A total of 222 participants were surveyed in 2018, including 101 males (45.50%) and 121 females (54.50%). There were 118 participants aged 60-<70 years (53.15%), 145 participants with rural household registration (65.32%), and 35 participants (15.77%) with depressive symptoms. The prevalence of depressive symptoms was higher among older participants and participants with hypertension (both P<0.05). In 2021, 192 participants were followed up, and 30 participants were lost to follow-up. Seven participants were found to have depressive symptoms, with a prevalence of 3.65%. Among them, four participants had been found to have depressive symptoms in 2018, and three participants were newly detected. Conclusions The prevalence of depressive symptoms among middle-aged and elderly residents in Xihu District was relatively low. Advanced age and hypertension might be associated with the risk of depressive symptoms.
