Abstract:Objective To explore the association between the high-sensitivity C-reactive protein to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (hs-CRP/HDL-C) and hyperuricemia among middle-aged and elderly population by gender, so as to provide the evidence for hyperuricemia prevention and control in the middle-aged and elderly population. Methods Based on the 2015 survey data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), data including demographic characteristics, lifestyles, disease histories, serum uric acid, hs-CRP and HDL-C were collected for participants aged ≥45 years, and the hs-CRP/HDL-C ratio was calculated. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to analyze the association between hs-CRP/HDL-C and hyperuricemia stratified by gender, and restricted cubic spline models were applied to assess the dose-response relationships. Results A total of 9 990 middle-aged and elderly participants were included, including 4 674 males (46.79%) and 5 316 females (53.21%). There were 1 092 cases of hyperuricemia with prevalence of 10.93%, including 614 male cases (prevalence 13.14%) and 478 female cases (prevalence 8.99%). After adjusting for covariable including age, education level and marital status, multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that hs-CRP/HDL-C was significantly associated with hyperuricemia risk in both males (OR=1.660, 95%CI: 1.400-1.968) and females (OR=2.190, 95%CI: 1.803-2.659). Restricted cubic spline analysis showed a non-linear relationship between hs-CRP/HDL-C and hyperuricemia risk for both genders (both Pfor non-linearity<0.05). Conclusion An elevated hs-CRP/HDL-C may increase the risk of hyperuricemia in middle-aged and elderly population of both genders, with a relatively higher risk observed in females.
