Electronic cigarette use and use intention among vocational high school students

Abstract:Objective To investigate the current status of electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) use and use intention among vocational high school students, so as to provide the basis for developing interventions for adolescent e-cigarette use. Methods The students from three public and three private vocational high schools in Dongguan City, Guangdong Province were collected using stratified cluster random sampling method. Data of personal, campus, family and social factors, and elements related to social cognitive theory were collected through questionnaire surveys. Factors affecting e-cigarette use and use intention were analyzed by multivariable logistic regression models. Results A total of 22 402 students were surveyed, and 18 683 valid questionnaires were recovered, with an effective recovery rate of 83.40%. There were 9 324 males (49.91%) and 9 359 females (50.09%). A total of 1 467 students used e-cigarettes, accounting for 7.85%. Among those who had never used e-cigarettes, 5 067 had use intentions, accounting for 29.43%. Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that the students who were male (OR=1.872, 95%CI: 1.597-2.195), tried conventional cigarettes (OR=15.469, 95%CI: 13.386-17.875), heard of e-cigarettes (OR=2.368, 95%CI: 1.680-3.338), attended private schools (OR=1.517, 95%CI: 1.318-1.746), had some friends who smoke (OR=4.365, 95%CI: 2.616-7.284), were recommended e-cigarettes by users (OR=2.230, 95%CI: 1.991-2.498) and had low self-efficacy scores (OR=0.942, 95%CI: 0.932-0.952) were more likely to use e-cigarettes; the students who were in Grade 3 (OR=1.172, 95%CI: 1.053-1.305), were male (OR=1.256, 95%CI: 1.155-1.365), tried conventional cigarettes (OR=1.335, 95%CI: 1.107-1.611), attended private schools (OR=1.204, 95%CI: 1.107-1.309), were unsure if their schools were smoke-free (OR=1.181, 95%CI: 1.058-1.317), had both parents (OR=1.469, 95%CI: 1.130-1.911) or only mother who smoke (OR=1.396, 95%CI: 1.074-1.815), were recommended e-cigarettes by users (OR=1.274, 95%CI: 1.166-1.391), had low self-efficacy scores (OR=0.905, 95%CI: 0.898-0.913), had low outcome expectancy scores (OR=0.920, 95%CI: 0.914-0.926) and had low goal setting and self-regulatory behavior scores (OR=0.942, 95%CI: 0.933-0.951) had stronger e-cigarette use intentions. Conclusion E-cigarette use and use intention among vocational high school students are mainly influenced by gender, experience of trying conventional cigarettes, school type, having been recommended e-cigarettes by users, and factors related to social cognitive theory.
