| Epidemiological characteristics of varicella in Wenzhou City from 2012 to 2024 |

Abstract Objective To analyze the incidence trend and epidemiological characteristics of varicella in Wenzhou City, Zhejiang province, from 2012 to 2024, so as to provide the evidence for formulating varicella prevention and control measures. Methods Varicella incidence data in Wenzhou City from 2012 to 2024 were collected through the Chinese Disease Prevention and Control Information System. The average annual percent change (AAPC) and annual percent change (APC) were used to analyze the incidence trend, and descriptive analysis was used to analyze the demographic, regional and temporal distribution. Results A total of 95 465 varicella cases were reported in Wenzhou City from 2012 to 2024, with an average annual incidence of 78.63/105. The trend in incidence was not statistically significant (AAPC=-1.939%, P>0.05). The incidence showed an upward trend from 2012 to 2018 (APC=8.520%, P<0.05) and a downward trend from 2018 to 2024 (APC=-11.389%, P<0.05). The average annual incidence was 85.34/105 for males and 71.15/105 for females (P<0.05). The top three age groups with the highest average annual incidence were 10-<15 years, 5-<10 years and 0-<5 years, with incidence rates of 544.79/105, 383.52/105 and 190.70/105, respectively. Students, kindergarten children and scattered children accounted for most cases, with 56 701, 10 115 and 9 948 cases accounting for 59.39%, 10.60% and 10.42%, respectively. Yueqing City, Lucheng District and Cangnan County had the largest number of cases, with 16 341, 14 963 and 12 805 cases accounting for 17.12%, 15.67% and 13.41%, respectively. December, November and January were the peak months, with 17 519, 13 619 and 10 476 cases accounting for 18.35%, 14.27% and 10.97%, respectively. Conclusions The average annual varicella incidence remained relatively high in Wenzhou City from 2012 to 2024, presenting an overall trend of first increasing and then decreasing. Males and students were high-risk populations, Yueqing City, Lucheng District and Cangnan County were high-incidence areas, and winter was the peak season.
