| Trend in incidence of diabetes mellitus in Wenzhou City from 2016 to 2023 |

Abstract Objective To analyze the trend in incidence of diabetes mellitus in Wenzhou City, Zhejiang Province from 2016 to 2023, so as to provide the evidence for optimizing diabetes prevention and control strategies. Methods Data on diabetes mellitus incidence in Wenzhou City from 2016 to 2023 were collected through the diabetes surveillance platform of the Wenzhou City Chronic Disease Monitoring Information Management System. The crude incidence of diabetes mellitus was calculated and standardized using the data from the Sixth National Population Census in 2010. The average annual percent change (AAPC) was used to analyze the trend in diabetes mellitus incidence. Results From 2016 to 2023, a total of 331 561 new cases of diabetes mellitus were reported in Wenzhou City. The crude incidence and standardized incidence were 514.55/105 and 434.94/105, respectively, showing increasing trends (AAPC=5.801% and 3.602%, both P<0.05). The crude incidence and standardized incidence for males were 511.89/105 and 439.73/105, respectively, with increasing trends (AAPC=7.129% and 4.825%, both P<0.05); for females, the crude incidence and standardized incidence were 517.40/105 and 434.31/105, respectively, also showing increasing trends (AAPC=4.402% and 2.502%, both P<0.05). The incidence was relatively high in the age group of 70-<80 years, reaching 1 418.90/105. Except for the 50-<60 and ≥80 years age groups, the crude incidence in groups aged 0-<10 years, 10-<20 years, 20-<30 years, 30-<40 years, 40-<50 years, 60-<70 years, and 70-<80 years all showed increasing trends (AAPC=17.742%, 14.082%, 8.204%, 8.748%, 4.866%, 6.475%, and 9.853%, all P<0.05). The crude incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus and gestational diabetes mellitus were 423.98/105 and 93.39/105, respectively, showing increasing trends (AAPC=7.858% and 15.359%, both P<0.05). The crude incidence of type 1 diabetes mellitus was 5.20/105, with no statistically significant trend (P>0.05). Conclusions The overall incidence of diabetes mellitus in Wenzhou City from 2016 to 2023 showed an increasing trend, with a relatively rapid increase among males and children and adolescents. The incidence was higher among the elderly, and the cases were predominantly type 2 diabetes.
